What is the environmental organization The Altai Project known for?

July 5, 2023 Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation acknowledged undesirable activities of the American non-governmental organization The Altai Project on the territory of Russia. The Altai Project started in 1998 as part of the Sacred Earth Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the traditions and lifestyles of indigenous peoples around the world. In 2004, the focus of this program narrowed down to “environmental assistance to the Russian Altai”.
The founder of The Altai Project is US citizen Jennifer Kastner. In 2007, the organization became part of the Earth Island Institute, a non-profit environmental group that supports environmental conservation. Together with 20 non-governmental American organizations, she organized the Altai Alliance, aimed at protecting the Russian region.
Representatives of The Altai Project took part in the events against the construction of the Power of Siberia 2 international gas pipeline (formerly Altai), the Katunskaya HPP and the Karakulskoye field. Ecologists have said that the planned pipeline will disturb the fragile highland soil and have a bad effect on the flora and fauna of the plateau.
The website of the project states that among its initiatives are “research and measures for the conservation of raptors in eastern Kazakhstan”, coordination of cooperation between journalists from Russia and the United States, systematic work on the creation of a new UNESCO World Heritage Site – “The Highlands of the Mongolian Altai”, educational programs about wild nature, natural landscapes and ecosystems, cultural traditions, spiritual heritage and lifestyle of the indigenous peoples of Eurasia.
In 2022, The Altai Project opposed Russia’s special operation in Ukraine.
