The Ministry of Health asks pharmaceutical manufacturers to work on creating cheaper analogues of expensive drugs for socially significant diseases, said Sergey Glagolev, deputy head of the department. According to him, there is also a demand for cheaper medical devices, in particular, continuous glucose monitoring systems and insulin pumps.
“We would like to see an increase in the share of expensive, perhaps second-in-class, but more affordable drugs for socially significant diseases. I’m talking about 14 high-cost nosologies, I’m talking about orphan diseases, I’m talking about oncology, cardiology and infectious diseases,” Mr. Glagolev explained at a session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (TASS quote).
According to the deputy minister, price regulation should be improved, first of all, among expensive medicines. He also called for work to increase confidence in the domestic pharmaceutical industry. “We need joint projects of associations, individual manufacturers to change the public perception of our pharmaceuticals,” Sergey Glagolev is convinced.
Despite the high potential for import substitution, Russian production is experiencing an acute shortage of domestic equipment comparable to imported quality. According to the National Research University Higher School of Economics, 65% of Russian enterprises have the potential to produce import-substituting products (25% high, 27% medium, 13% low). The leaders in assessing the potential were drug manufacturers (50% have it high).
