Water helps slow down the aging process and reduce chronic diseases

Scientists have found that drinking enough water every day “may slow down aging.” The study involved more than 11,000 people over the age of 30, and monitored their sodium levels in their blood, which usually rises when dehydrated. It turned out that adults with higher levels of sodium were 64 percent more likely to develop chronic diseases such as heart failure and strokes, lung disease, diabetes and dementia, as well as a higher risk of dying at a young age.
The US team hypothesized that water restriction leads to DNA damage and inflammation, accelerating the aging process. Dehydration causes short-term problems, including dizziness, fatigue, and headaches. In the long term, it can also raise your risk of other problems, including constipation, kidney stones, and bad skin. The study did not specify exactly how much water is needed, but scientists recommend drinking six to eight cups a day – that’s about two liters.
Lead author Dr. Natalya Dmitrieva of the US National Institutes of Health: “The results show that drinking enough water can slow aging and prolong disease-free lives.”
The results, published in the journal EBioMedicine, support findings from previous studies suggesting that lower-than-normal levels of hydration may contribute to a range of negative factors that contribute to age-related disease.
There are recent studies showing that for some people, drinking eight glasses of water a day may be too much. However, this is only if they were getting enough fluid from water-rich foods such as soup.
