Public activists in Vorkuta fear that the accident at the wastewater treatment plant has led to serious pollution of the Vorkuta River. Local authorities claim that the water purification technology has been restored – there is no longer a threat to the health of consumers. Ecologists sent water samples for independent analysis to laboratories in Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod.
According to the administration of Vorkuta, the accident occurred on December 24, 2022 at a wastewater treatment plant in Vorkuta. “At the treatment facilities, damage was found to the ceilings of the passage channel between the primary settling tank and the aerotank,” he said then on his page in “In contact with” mayor of the city Yaroslav Shaposhnikov. At that time, local residents wrote on social networks that a hundred-meter-long asphalt crossing collapsed into the basement, and load-bearing walls and pipes turned out to be underground.
The municipality could be left for the New Year holidays without a sewage treatment system. However, on December 26 government statementit was decided to destroy the damaged channel, and after removing the debris, completely restore the cleaning system.
The laboratory of Vodokanal LLC carried out measurements at the outlet of sewage water. The level of pollution does not exceed the criteria for classifying an event as an emergency, the mayor said in his account.
At the end of December, representatives of the Center for Laboratory Analysis and Technical Measurements took water from the river for a sample, but the results were not made public.
Ivan Ivanov, chairman of the public organization “Committee for Saving the Pechora” (a non-governmental organization working in the Pechora River basin), said that on January 10 he visited the site of the accident. “The place where the Parallelny brook flows into the Vorkuta River, the place of emergency draining of sewage, was examined,” he said. Sewer drains, even without rough cleaning, go directly to the Vorkuta River. He points out that the design capacity of the treatment plant is 40 thousand cubic meters per day, which can enter the river. According to him, the public also took samples at several points in the river.
Vorkuta social activist Eduard Petrov told Kommersant that environmentalists have been raising the alarm for many years because of the dilapidated treatment facilities. In 2018, the floor beams were reinforced in the building. “But since the station was built back in 1976, a thorough overhaul of the building is long overdue,” Kommersant’s interlocutor said. According to him, even if we assume that cleaning has been restored in Vorkuta itself, “then what about the wastewater that, due to the accident, got into the water and reached the settlements located downstream.”
“Near Vorkuta, as well as in the border Inta, there are many villages and villages whose inhabitants are forced to use water from water carriers that come to them. And they have water from the river. No cleaning!” Mr. Petrov explained.
According to the ecologist, the samples were sent to laboratories in Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod, but the results are not yet ready. He added that he was awaiting a conclusion about the abnormal state of the water, since even a visual inspection recorded that “the water smells strongly and white thread-like worms are visible in it.”
