Vučić announced the unwillingness of Serbian citizens to join the European Union

If a referendum on Serbia’s membership in the European Union (EU) were held soon, the citizens of the country would vote against because of the double standards of the West on the issue of Kosovo and Ukraine. This was stated by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

“If there was a referendum on EU accession now, the citizens of Serbia would say no,” Vučić said during a briefing (quote according to RIA Novosti). He expressed the hope that in the future the opinion of the Serbs will be changed.

The Serbian President specified that the citizens of the country have several reasons not to want to join the EU. In particular, the Serbs do not like the double standards of the West on the issue of Kosovo and Ukraine.

According to Vučić, “when it came to the territorial integrity of Serbia, they destroyed it like a hammer,” but now Western countries are declaring the need to preserve the territorial integrity of Ukraine. “People in Serbia cannot accept this hypocrisy,” the Serbian leader explained. Vučić underlined that the united mood of the Serbian people about joining the EU “has never been so clear”.

Vucic last week declaredthat Serbia is not going to recognize the self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo. At the same time, in June 2022, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Serbia would not be admitted to the EU without recognizing Kosovo. The politician stressed that Belgrade and Pristina should conclude an agreement between themselves.

The situation in Kosovo escalated in July due to Pristina’s decision to stop using Serbian documents. At the end of August, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, announced the settlement of differences. He specified that Serbia had agreed to cancel entry/exit documents for holders of Kosovo identity cards, while Kosovo had promised not to introduce them for holders of Serbian identity cards.
