VTsIOM announced a poll among citizens of the Russian Federation on the topic “symbols of Russia” – the respondents were asked to name the most prominent, in their opinion, figures. The results showed that it was easier for the respondents to name such “symbols” from other eras than to cite contemporaries as an example.

The most popular, according to a poll by VTsIOM, were Alexander Pushkin and Peter I – 21% and 20% respectively. 17% of respondents voted for Joseph Stalin, followed by 8% each for Mikhail Lomonosov and Vladimir Lenin. Catherine II, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Alexander Suvorov and Georgy Zhukov received 6% each.

Answering the question about the authors of discoveries or famous works, only 63% of respondents named Alexander Popov as the “father of radio”. The same percentage of answers was received by Dostoevsky in the question about the authorship of the novel Crime and Punishment. Only half of the respondents – 52% – were able to correctly name Tchaikovsky in the question of the authorship of the Nutcracker ballet. The correct answers to all three questions were given by a third of the respondents – 32%.
