VPN is watching you: Khinshtein explained the risks of using block bypass services

There will be no complete blocking of VPN services in Russia. Whether or not to use programs to bypass Internet blocks is up to the users themselves. However, downloading a VPN is like giving your gadget to a stranger and trusting that everything will be fine. This was stated by the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications, Alexander Khinshtein, on air at MK.
Logging onto the Internet using a VPN can be an area of unexpected risk. Such programs collect user data, which can then fall into the hands of anyone – from Western intelligence services to large corporations selling diapers or smartphones.
“I will illustrate why this is beneficial for business with simple examples. For example, a retail chain, by gaining access to data, analyzes and understands preferences, requests, locations. Where are you coming from, where do you live, where do you work. Understands which stores are on this route, the size of your average check, your financial condition. Because most likely the credit card is connected to your phone and it is possible to see your balance,” explained Alexander Khinshtein.
The head of the Duma IT committee compared downloading VPN services to the belief that a stranger, who has fallen into the hands of someone else’s gadget, will not steal it.
At the same time, the deputy denied rumors that the use of VPN services will be completely prohibited in Russia. Starting March 1, the country will introduce restrictions on the popularization of programs that allow you to bypass Roskomnadzor blocks. At the same time, the Ministry of Communications has compiled a list of “white” VPN services that can be downloaded without risk to personal data, Khinshtein emphasized.
