Vice-President of the Football Federation of Tajikistan (FFT) Alisher Urunov expressed regret that the issue of removing the foreign status of Tajik football players playing in Russia still remains unresolved. Removal of foreign player status from Tajik FFT players discusses with the Russian Football Union (RFU) and the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation from November 2022.
Starting from the 2022/23 season, the Russian Premier League (RPL) has a limit on foreign players of up to 13 foreigners per application. In this case, no more than eight players can be on the field at the same time. The status of foreign players in the Russian Championship does not apply to players from Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan.
“Unfortunately, we still have an unresolved issue regarding the status of legionnaires. This applies to players who have Tajik roots, and so that they are not considered foreign players if they play for the Tajikistan national team. I would like a solution on this issue, but so far there are no specifics, there are no positive changes. I can’t understand who and what would have lost if the players had played at the level of national teams, at the level of qualifying matches for the World Cup or the Asian Cup, because this is a plus on the contrary,” said “RIA News” Mr. Urunov.
Alisher Urunov noted that among Tajik athletes there are many people with dual citizenship. He expressed hope that the Russian football community “will begin to look towards Tajikistan and Central Asia with different eyes.” “Tajikistan is a small, but very, very football country with huge traditions, so we are ready to continue to play and cooperate, to improve our cooperation. We have a memorandum of cooperation in place, but I can say that this is an uncultivated field, and this cooperation must take place at a higher level,” he concluded.
