Russian prosthetic technology for pets, based on the use of a 3D printer to create prostheses, has proven to be effective, but needs constant improvement. This was announced by a veterinarian from Novosibirsk Sergey Gorshkov, who works in the clinic “Best”, RIA Novosti reports.

In 2021, veterinarians from Novosibirsk successfully installed prostheses on all four paws for the first time in the world in a dog that has since moved to the UK and feels great. The prostheses have taken root perfectly at 90 percent.

At the beginning of 2020, veterinarians were also able to install artificial limbs on all paws of a cat from Novokuznetsk, which now leads a full life. In total, over the past few years, specialists have carried out about 40 such operations.

One of the problems that veterinarians have faced is the rapid wear of the outer parts of the prosthesis, made of silicone and composite materials, which must be replaced, like tires on a car. Currently, polyurethane is used in prostheses, and the outer part of the prosthesis is removable and can be easily replaced when worn.
