Vatican: Transgender people can be baptized and be godparents

A new document from the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (formerly the Holy Inquisition) asserts that transgender people have the right to baptism in the Roman Catholic Church. The answers to the questions, submitted by Brazilian Bishop José Negri in July, were signed by the prefect of the dicastery, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, and approved by Pope Francis in October.

The document states that transsexuals can be baptized provided they have undergone hormonal treatment or undergone gender reassignment surgery. However, it is emphasized that this is only possible if there is no risk of public scandal or disorientation of believers.

The issue of baptism of children of homosexual couples, including those born through surrogacy, is also spelled out. The Dicastery allows this possibility, specifying that the baptism of children is possible if there is “a reasonable hope that the child will be raised in the Catholic faith.”
