“Valera is truly a Master”

The top Russian music video director, Yuri Grymov, moved away from filming music videos quite a long time ago and completely immersed himself in theatrical activities. He explains this directly: show business has transformed monstrously since the time when he himself made videos for the coolest stars, and today only scandals are needed in this area. “I’m past this,” says the director.

However, there is one performer for whose sake Grymov is ready to abandon his principled position, this is Valery Leontyev. Yuri, by his own admission, would certainly shoot a video for him, as he pays tribute to the artist’s enormous talent:

— Leontiev is one of the few, an ARTIST. Moreover, all the letters are in capital letters: ARTIST,” he said in an interview with MK.

Yuri remembered with what inspiration they had already made videos with Valery Leontyev for the songs “Michelle” and “Augustine”. Thinking about what kind of video he would shoot for Leontyev today, Grymov opts for the song “Margarita”.

“Valera is truly a Master,” he says.

Grymov is also attracted by the fact that Valery Leontyev, while working, gives the director the opportunity to realize his talent and his vision of the material to the fullest.

“Like a normal great artist, he trusts the director, says: “We will do it the way you want,” says Grymov, recalling previous works.

Yuri is sure that any talented artist needs a director, but mediocre actors are always confident in themselves and always know exactly what they need to do on stage. Only this invariably leads to failure. And he says that he once managed to motivate such legendary performers as Valery Leontyev and Alla Pugacheva to make the most unusual image decisions that have remained in the history of Russian music video art.

“Of course, I would direct Valeria Leontyev’s Margarita,” the director is unequivocally confident.

Today, Grymov realizes his talent as a director at the Modern Theater, where he makes very bold productions, choosing the most outstanding personalities as the heroes of the performances – from Leonardo da Vinci to Kurt Cobain. He even decided to present to the viewer the images of Judas and Christ himself.

In terms of theatrical activities, among the stars of show business, Grymov singles out Lolita, who played in one of his performances on the stage of the Modern theater – “Marriage”. However, a difficult concert schedule prevented the singer from completely switching to theatrical activities. By the way, today, when Lolita was forced out of work because of the disgrace that fell on her due to her participation in the “naked party,” she may need to remember this experiment. In any case, Grymov recognized her “talent as a dramatic actress.”

By the way, Yuri does not forget about cinema. Today, the director, who is quite a cult figure in the field of cinema, is interested in Internet platforms. “There are six platforms, and each one is trying to attract the viewer. Maybe I’ll also shoot something new for them,” he reflects.
