The vaccine against new strains of COVID-19 was created on the basis of the Sputnik V vaccine. The antigenic composition has changed, but the name remains the same. Therefore, it would be incorrect to call the vaccine new. This was told by the director of the Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology Alexander Gintsburg.
According to him, when receiving a vaccine against new strains of coronavirus, the same path was chosen as when updating the flu vaccine. It is believed that according to the rules, such a procedure as replacing a vaccine strain should take three months. Conducting a full range of clinical trials can take twice as long, and during this period new strains may already appear.
Alexander Gintsburg also explained that a vaccine was prepared in the center of Gamaleya, which contains a sequence of “delta” and “omicron”. Presumably, it will be equally effective both against these strains and against the BA.5 strain.
