This year, Russian businesses were most often looking for sales managers, cashiers and drivers. The ranking of the most in-demand professions in 2023 was published by the recruiting platform hh.ru. Experts analyzed over 10 million open vacancies in the country and found that the largest share of them (7.5%) were specialists who sell certain goods and services. Moreover, the demand for them increased one and a half times year on year.

At the same time, flight attendants were the least likely searched for – only 200 vacancies throughout Russia, as well as compliance managers, directors of legal departments, game designers and underwriters, these are specialists in assessing insurance risks.

Moreover, the top least and most in demand professions have not changed for a couple of years, stressed the head of the press service of the hh.ru company, Alexander Dzhabarov: “It is sales managers who mainly ensure business growth. This means not only, for example, employees of household appliance stores, but also sales of B2B services, some industrial goods, whatever.

As for cashiers and drivers, this is the backbone of the labor market, a profession in mass demand. Hiring never stops for them.

If we talk about undemanded professions, then in the case of flight attendants, this may be explained by the fact that restrictions on international flights have been in effect for the second year. The inclusion of underwriters in this list reflects the development of neural networks and artificial intelligence. After all, the functionality of insurance risk assessment specialists is replaced by AI, that is, the machine itself calculates transactions and credit scoring.”

According to hh.ru calculations, the top 15 most popular professions among employers also included an accountant, a cook, a call center operator, a packer, a doctor, a programmer, a handyman, a plumber, and a courier.

What kind of specialists does business plan to look for first in the next year? The general director of the Finn Flare clothing store chain, Ksenia Ryasova, in an interview with Kommersant FM, admitted that, as in 2023, we are talking mainly about sellers:

“We have been looking for a director of a representative office in Kazakhstan for more than six months, but, of course, most of all, salespeople. We have no problems with drivers and storekeepers. And since regional stores are very dependent on the corporate culture, on the director, that is, points with a high turnover. And there is a constant need for salespeople there.

There are regions where the share of the defense sector is very high, huge salaries and reservations from mobilization, so it is also very difficult to find employees for stores there. Sellers will definitely remain at the top next year.”

In addition to salespeople, IT specialists remain among the top most in demand next year, without whom it will not be possible to quickly develop a business. The general director of the Russian cuisine restaurant chain Teremok, Mikhail Goncharov, told Kommersant FM about this: “First of all, we will expand the IT department, because a lot of projects are related to the automation of online sales, delivery and loyalty systems.

Now we are faced with a choice: either we will implement our plan for two years, or we will expand the composition of the department and solve the same problem in six months. In addition, we are actively working with vocational schools to target candidates at an early stage for employment at Teremok as a cook-cashier.”

Against the backdrop of general automation next year, specialists in setting up production units will also be most in demand, predicts the president of the Pobeda confectionery factory, Vitaly Muravyov: “We have no problems finding sellers and sales managers. The difficulty is finding the engineering staff.

Since there is not enough production personnel, we are forced to automate many stages of work, and there are practically no specialists with relevant experience.

There is a serious shortage of personnel in this profession, as there once was with IT specialists.”

In the summer of 2023, the Bank of Russia reported that since the beginning of the year, industry has recorded the lowest level of personnel in the last 25 years. According to Rostrud, at the beginning of August there were almost 2 million vacancies on the “Work in Russia” portal, but they were closed very slowly.

In turn, Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov said in September that the low unemployment rate is abnormal. According to him, this slows down the country’s economy.
