He noted that their second meeting during Zuppi’s visit to Russia took place after the special envoy was received by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’, and also discussed specific issues with Maria Lvova-Belova, Commissioner for Children’s Rights.

“Both of these contacts were very useful,” Ushakov stressed.

Following the meeting on June 30, the parties agreed to maintain contact and agreed that Zuppi would personally report to Pope Francis on his impressions of the talks in Moscow, after which there would be an understanding of how to “coordinate joint work on the humanitarian track.” “That is, we agreed to remain in contact, and Zuppi clearly said that he would continue his mission on behalf of Pope Francis,” said the assistant to the President of the Russian Federation.

Zuppi arrived in Moscow on the evening of 27 June. The Vatican said that the Pope’s envoy will stay in Moscow on June 28 and 29. The purpose of this visit “is to encourage gestures of humanity that can contribute to resolving the current tragic situation and finding ways to achieve a just peace,” the Vatican explained.

The envoy had already met with Ushakov on 28 June. During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on humanitarian issues, no specific agreements were reached, informed Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.
