The prosecutor’s office for the Southern District of New York has charged the head of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Robert Menendez, with corruption, according to a message from the department on the social network X.
The criminal case also involves the wife of Senator Nadine Menendez. According to the prosecution, they had corrupt connections with three businessmen from New Jersey.
The New York Times citing the indictment writes, that in total the charge was brought on three counts. In particular, the senator acted in the interests of Egypt by disclosing information to the US government. He also tried to influence the criminal investigation against two businessmen.
The document states that the senator and his wife “received hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes, including cash, gold bars, luxury cars, etc.,” the newspaper notes.
Menendez is one of the initiators of anti-Russian sanctions. The newspaper calls him one of Washington’s most influential Democrats. In 2015, Menendez was already charged with bribery. But the jury was unable to reach a verdict; the court acquitted the senator on several charges, and the Justice Department rejected the rest.
