USDA approves two California companies to sell lab-grown chicken meat
The US Department of Agriculture has allowed two companies from the state of California to sell chicken meat grown in a special laboratory, informs the Associated Press.
Upside Foods and Good Meat have now received official approval to supply their products to supermarkets and restaurants. This came a few months after the US Department of Health Food and Drug Administration declared it fit for food.
To grow chicken meat in the laboratory, live bird cells, fertilized eggs or special “cell banks” are used.
Meat grown under artificial conditions will not appear on store shelves soon because of its price. The high cost does not allow the product to be produced on the same scale as ordinary chicken. In the near future, the companies intend to supply their meat to only two gourmet restaurants in Washington and San Francisco.
