Unsanitary standards: they decided to check manicurists

“I want to try myself in business, tell me what is more profitable: nails, eyelashes or hair?” These are the questions that start a million discussions on women’s forums – and they end with the opening of another beauty salon. More and more beauty industry professionals are eager to escape the captivity of salons and work for themselves – especially since now you can become self-employed. However, the apparent oversupply of hairdressers and eyebrow artists on the market has become a cause for concern: experts are wondering whether it is time to introduce mandatory certification for them.

I first encountered self-employment in the beauty industry when no one even knew such words: neither “self-employment” nor “beauty industry.”

“Come to my house,” the manicurist whispered confidentially before she allowed me to go to the cash register. — I’ll send the address via SMS. I’ll do everything at a discount.

There were still many years left before the term “professional income tax payer” (aka “self-employed”) appeared in the legal field, but, let’s face it, it wasn’t really needed. The trend – the desire not to work “for someone else”, but to be your own boss – did not appear yesterday.

The next time, the same manicurist frankly said that only 40% of the cost of the service ends up in her pocket, the rest is taken by the salon – and persistently repeated the offer to meet in private.

Then I cowardly refused. For a very selfish and prosaic reason: the salon was on the first floor of my house – and this was its main advantage – but going to the other end of the area to the hayloft… more precisely, excuse me, it’s not in my plans to go to the master’s house included.

Today you won’t surprise anyone with such things – a lot of people prefer to go not to the Romashka salon, but simply to the hairdresser Lenusik or the manicurist Svetik. However, almost no one invites you to your home – especially if there is no specially equipped office in a separate room: the era of manicure in the kitchen is over. More often, individual craftsmen rent premises.

Why Lenusik and Svetik need this is absolutely clear. Today, masters can easily earn about 50–60 thousand a week (not a month, a week!) “on nails.” The arithmetic is simple: the cost of a manicure is on average 2,000 rubles, and it takes two hours per client. This means that on a working day – from 10 to 21 o’clock, this is not an office with a call at 18.00 – you can have time to serve five. Five working days means 50 thousand in your pocket. Well, if you work seven days a week during the high season, then 70-80 thousand a week will work out. Of course, taxes, expenses for materials and premises must be subtracted from this amount (if the master does not work at home), but even so the remainder looks worthy. Deserving of quitting your job “for your uncle.”

And here – somewhere between the materials and the room – the time comes for questions: what kind of room is this? What kind of materials? Is everything okay there?

In January 2024, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation seriously thought about checking all Lenusikov and Svetikov, establishing additional requirements and introducing certification for self-employed in the beauty industry – corresponding proposals have already been sent to the government. And they did not arise out of nowhere: the fact is that today only legal entities and individual entrepreneurs are required to obtain a medical certificate and sterilize instruments (a basic requirement!). Anyone who has ever come to a salon for a manicure knows well the obligatory ritual – the master waves a sealed bag and announces: “The tool is disinfected!” Well, self-employed Lenusik and Svetik can technically ignore this. I would like to believe, of course, that they are not neglecting… but here everything is “in terms of concepts”.

And this is where the lion’s share of problems lie. Where the service sector turns into private arrangements, an elusive touch of handicraft immediately appears. But we shouldn’t forget about the very human factor, which can be equally bad or good. Getting infected by something through dirty tools is, of course, the worst-case scenario… there are also less dramatic options. Little things, but unpleasant ones.

“Make an appointment for your next visit immediately after the previous one!” – call individual masters. I wonder: how many people are ready to plan their lives taking into account the fact that on February 15 at 17.00 they need to come to Svetik for a manicure? Well, if you don’t have time, then rescheduling for tomorrow or even a couple of hours later is not an option: Svetik is busy. Hmm… This doesn’t seem to be a rare luminary doctor or even a visa center where snatching a free window is happiness in itself.

Although registration in most good salons, especially online ones, has long been automated – clients can use the application, chat with a chat bot in the messenger, or at least call the administrator. And the coveted “window for nails” will most likely be found at any moment – well, perhaps not on the evening of December 31, and if you are not tied to a specific master. Especially online: if you can’t find one in the salon on Pyatnitskaya, they’ll sign you up at Polyanka, no big deal. The client retains the right to impromptu and improvisation – to the opportunity to spontaneously, suddenly leaving work two hours earlier, decide that he wants nails right now.

In the market of traditional beauty salons, customers rule – it’s not for nothing that this is a “service industry”, and it’s not for nothing that the attitude “The customer is always right” exists. Clients make an appointment at a convenient time in a format convenient for them, drink good coffee from beautiful cups while they get a manicure and pedicure with four hands (or even six hands, if you also take care of your eyebrows), enjoy a head massage, and at the end they just pay the bill . Well, in the market of self-employed craftsmen,… masters rule. It was not for nothing that they strived to be their own masters. Svetik and Lenusik really do not obey anyone – not even the rules, because for them there are no rules. You can’t even check them yet.
