The Capital University of Oil and Gas announced an unscheduled vacation due to a case of measles. The educational institution must switch to a remote format for 21 days, and students must be vaccinated against measles. Infectionists called such measures justified: they indicate that there is a risk of spreading the disease outside the university.

Gubkin appeared announcement that from April 12 to April 16, anti-epidemiological measures against measles are being carried out at the university. The university was forced to announce an unscheduled vacation, during which students’ access to the university building will be closed. Students were also asked to upload their measles vaccination data to their personal account on the university website. The press service of Gubkin University did not comment on the situation in any way, the students also told Kommersant that they had not yet received any official information, in addition to the announcement posted on the website.

In the office of Rospotrebnadzor in Moscow reportedthat a case of measles infection was found in an educational institution in a student. Because of this, the university must switch to a remote format for 21 days. “An order was given to the head of the university to carry out additional sanitary and anti-epidemic measures,” the press service of the department said.

Specialists should determine the circle of people who have been in contact with the sick person and organize medical monitoring of them. If these people have not previously been vaccinated against measles, they must receive an emergency vaccine within 72 hours.

“The Department of Health of the city of Moscow organized eight vaccination teams for vaccination in hostels. In addition, vaccination is carried out among contact persons living at home addresses. The clinic providing vaccination is provided with a sufficient amount of measles vaccine ZhIV,” added the Rospotrebnadzor.

According to the National Immunization Schedule, children are vaccinated against measles at twelve months, and then again at six years. In adulthood, revaccination is not needed – it is believed that a person has already formed a stable immunity to the disease. However, Sergei Voznesensky, Associate Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases at RUDN University, in a conversation with Kommersant, said that since the early 1990s, far from all children have been vaccinated against measles. According to the expert, it is now necessary to carry out “clean-up vaccinations” for adults in order to reach people who do not have antibodies.

The head physician of the Leader Medicine clinic, infectious disease specialist Yevgeny Timakov, told Kommersant that the quarantine measures introduced at Gubkin University are fully justified: “Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease. The university cannot know for sure whether students have collective immunity, so the closure is necessary at least to clarify the data.” According to the expert, if the number of people susceptible to measles among those in contact with the sick person exceeds 10%, there is a risk of the infection spreading outside the university.
