United Russia supported the nomination of State Duma deputy Sokol to the governorship of Khakassia

The party conference of “United Russia” supported the nomination of State Duma deputy Sergei Sokol as a candidate in the upcoming elections of the governor of Khakassia, reported in the party’s Telegram channel.

“The candidacy of the secretary of the regional branch of United Russia, the deputy of the State Duma was supported by the delegates of the party conference,” the message says.

Sokol has been heading the regional branch of United Russia since December 2021. The party added that in October 2022, the deputy went to the war zone in Ukraine as a volunteer, where he served in the BARS air reconnaissance unit “Kaskad”. In January 2023, he extended his contract and continued his service. April 3, 2023 Sokol became a holder of the Order of Courage.

On April 21, after returning from the special operation zone, Sokol announced his nomination for the governor of Khakassia. The decision that he would run for United Russia was made by the headquarters of public support for the ruling party, opened on April 20, Andrei Turchak, Secretary of the United Russia General Council, said during a visit to Abakan. The politician called Sokol “a worthy candidate”, with whom they “went through more than one election campaign.”

Sokol will compete with the current governor of Khakassia, a member of the Communist Party Valentin Konovalov. He was elected to this post in 2018, beating the incumbent governor Viktor Zimin, who came from United Russia, in the first round. And a few days before the second round, Zimin withdrew from the elections, and then other candidates followed. By law, remaining the only candidate, Konovalov had to win the majority of votes. His score was 57.6%.
