Ukraine was surprised by Poland’s reaction to the EC’s decision on grain supplies

Poland’s tough rhetoric on the issue of Ukrainian grain supplies is unexpected for Kyiv. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olga Stefanishyna.
“Manipulation and blackmail related to the export of Ukrainian grain are very sensitive, since we actually have no other means of providing the world with grain except through the EU borders. Therefore, of course, this is very unexpected for us: such harsh rhetoric from the Polish side,” said the Deputy Prime Minister (quote according to TASS).
She noted that Warsaw and Kyiv competed in the grain market, “certain problems related to trade” arose, but Ukraine expected different behavior from Poland in the context of hostilities.
On September 15, the European Commission (EC) lifted restrictions on the import of Ukrainian grain to Eastern European countries. Following the commission’s decision, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced the extension of the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain. According to him, the Polish authorities “know very well” that “large international agricultural businesses and oligarchs want to make money at the expense of Polish farmers.”
In addition to Poland, other countries did not agree with the EC decision, in particular, Hungary and Slovakia. Hungarian Agriculture Minister Istvan Nagy explained that the Hungarian authorities introduced a ban on the import of a number of Ukrainian goods in order to protect local farmers.
