The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine is developing a bill, according to which the English language is given the status of the language of international communication in the country, said the first deputy head of the ministry, Rostislav Karandaev.

“The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, on the relevant instructions of the Prime Minister of Ukraine, began work on preparing a bill to ensure the functioning of the English language as the language of international communication,” – leads his words TASS.

According to the official, Ukraine and the EU are separated by a language barrier, and changing the status of the English language will help solve this problem. The bill will probably fix the obligation for law enforcement officers and civil servants to speak English, he added.

In 2019, the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada adopted in the final reading the bill “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language”. It secures the exclusive rights of Ukrainian over other languages in a multinational country. On January 16, 2021, the 30th article of the law came into force, obliging service enterprises to use the state language when serving customers.
