Ukraine ranked first in the world in the number of mines and unexploded ordnance, ahead of Afghanistan and Syria. According to expert reports, about a third of the country’s territory is contaminated with mines, cluster bombs and shell fragments.

According to Time, extensive minefields not only slowed down the military counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but also endangered the lives of 6 million civilians and made entire regions with agricultural land unusable.

The GLOBSEC think tank, based in Slovakia, has concluded that it will take Ukraine 757 years to independently clear its territory of mines.
