A two-year-old boy, whose intestines were stuffed with magnetic balls, was hospitalized the other day in the Children’s City Clinical Hospital No. G.N. Speransky. Parents did not even suspect that their baby ate half of the 3+ children’s designer, thinking that their son was simply poisoned.
As it became known to “MK”, the concern of the parents was caused by the fact that the child began to refuse food and complained of severe pain in the abdomen. Dad and mom began to think that the little one was poisoned by dairy products. The hospital immediately took an X-ray, which showed the presence of foreign objects in the abdominal cavity – 15 balls from a magnetic constructor.
Once in the gastrointestinal tract, the balls connected into a ring, passed part of the ileum and damaged the vessels that feed it.
Due to the serious condition of the child, the surgeons decided to perform an emergency open operation – laparotomy. Doctors freed the compressed intestinal loops, sewed up the perforated areas and removed the dead area of the ileum.
– We removed the non-viable segment and simultaneously sewed together the healthy parts of the intestine. The postoperative period was uneventful, – said pediatric surgeon Ruslan Molotov. “However, due to the removal of part of the intestine, the child needed a special diet, as with short bowel syndrome.
With this syndrome, ordinary food is not digested at first. Therefore, for a week, the baby received nutrients intravenously and was under the supervision of a clinical nutritionist.
