An attempt to illegally enter the United States on a hang glider was made by two Cubans. They crossed the United States border and landed safely at Key West International Airport in Florida. There they were detained by border guards. About this in his social networks wrote the head of the Miami sector of the US Border Patrol, Walter Slosar. He noted that there were no casualties.
It is not known where exactly the Cubans were flying from. However, in any case, they had to cross the Strait of Florida on a trike. And fly at least 170 km in a straight line. Given that different models of hang gliders are designed for different flight ranges and some of them cannot travel more than 120 km without refueling, this was an extremely risky step.
This is not the first attempt to escape from the “Island of Freedom” with the help of an aircraft. Last year, a Cuban stole an old, still Soviet An-2 aircraft. Cuban authorities called the incident air piracy. However, the hijacker managed to obtain asylum in the US.
