Two cases of nearly incurable Marburg virus detected in Cameroon

Cameroonian authorities on Monday discovered two cases of suspected Marburg disease in a commune on the border with Equatorial Guinea.
Cameroon has restricted movement along the border to avoid infection after reports of an unknown deadly haemorrhagic fever in Equatorial Guinea last week.
“On February 13, we had two cases. These are two 16-year-old children, a boy and a girl, who have not previously traveled to Equatorial Guinea, ”a representative of the medical department said.
The deadly Marburg virus first emerged this week in Equatorial Guinea, killing at least nine people in the West African country, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Earlier Tuesday, the WHO said it was stepping up epidemiological surveillance in Equatorial Guinea.
Last week, Equatorial Guinea quarantined more than 200 people and restricted movement in Ki Ntem province, where the hemorrhagic fever was first detected.
According to the WHO, Marburg virus is a highly contagious disease with a mortality rate of up to 88 percent. There are no approved drugs for it.
