Russian specialists can “open” a flying satellite and look into its microcircuits while on Earth, in the Mission Control Center.
The Russian Space Systems holding has developed a program that creates a digital twin of a spacecraft.
So far, visual inspection of orbiting satellites, launch vehicles or their boosters has been impossible. The analysis of their current state was carried out using the telemetric data displayed on the operator’s monitor and a two-dimensional picture of the electrical circuits of the equipment. Data from each sensor
about the position of the device in space, about its height above the Earth, about the angles of rotation of the solar batteries and the state of the on-board instruments, etc., were received by specialists separately. To combine them and calculate the deviations from the reference performance parameters required time and additional effort. The emerging digital twin allows you to “live” and instantly observe any deviations and eliminate their consequences.
In fact, the designers say that what appears on the computer monitor is an absolute 3D copy of the real device. It is much easier for a specialist to perceive and analyze information coming from a satellite.
Now on the same screen, simultaneously with telemetry, a picture of the satellite or launch vehicle itself appears. The operator sees clearly separate units of equipment, the engine, fuel tanks, solar panels, batteries in full accordance with their real state. They are able to change position and color in accordance with the real on-off indicators, pressure, temperature, fuel content, operating modes, the position of the satellite relative to the Earth and other spacecraft. According to experts, all this is very similar to a computer flight simulator – only the RKS model projects a real satellite at a specific point in the orbit.
The new development is planned to be tested in the near future during the launch of the Kondor-FKA satellite.
