Ilya Kovalchuk, a 40-year-old hockey player from Tver, will return to the ice as part of Spartak, reports news.sportbox.ru with reference to a statement by the Chairman of the Spartak Board of Trustees, Alexander Yakushev.
The first match after a long break for Kovalchuk will take place on December 24 – he will play with Kunlun in the Fonbet KHL Championship. Alexander Yakushev warmly responded to the hockey player’s return to the club and is confident that it will have a positive impact on the results of the team as a whole:
– I feel great about the return of Ilya Kovalchuk to Spartak. He started his career in our club, and it is symbolic that he will continue his performance in Spartak. I am sure that this will be a big, big help to the team.
Kovalchuk last played in the KHL in April 2021 with Avangard, winning the Gagarin Cup. Afterwards, he did not compete for two and a half seasons, but traveled as a manager with the Russian national team to the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.
