Türkiye again refused to let Sweden into NATO
Turkey will not approve Sweden’s entry into NATO until the authorities of the Scandinavian state ensure the implementation of the obligations to combat terrorism in practice. This statement was made on Wednesday, June 21, by the speaker of the Turkish parliament, Numan Kurtulmush.
The politician stressed that Ankara expects Stockholm to fulfill the provisions of the memorandum agreed in June 2022 during the NATO summit in Madrid.
Ankara reacted positively to the adoption of an anti-terrorist law in Sweden, but “concrete steps are needed to implement it – this is Turkey’s fair demand,” Kurtulmus said. Otherwise, Sweden’s application to join the North Atlantic Alliance will not be satisfied by the Turkish side, the politician warned.
Turkey had claims against Sweden in connection with the activities of Kurdish organizations in the Scandinavian country, which are prohibited on Turkish territory. Relations between the countries escalated after the action in Stockholm with the burning of the Koran – it was carried out with the permission of the Swedish authorities.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was saddened by the fact that demonstrations by terrorists from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party are still taking place on the streets of Sweden. He also pointed out that the efforts of NATO allies not enough to solve this problem.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg admitted that there are no guarantees that Sweden will join the alliance in July during the summit in Vilnius, although “we are actively working on it”.
