Trump charged with trying to influence 2020 election results

Georgia Grand Jury Indicts Former US President Donald Trump in Trial to Overturn 2020 Presidential Election Results informs Bloomberg, citing a Fulton District Court document.

There are 18 other people involved in the case, including former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and former senior Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark. Charges have also been brought against them.

The court document says they “deliberately sided” with Trump in order to influence the outcome of the election. The ex-president and other defendants in the case deny their guilt.

The agency notes that, in addition to racketeering, all 19 defendants are accused of giving false testimony, inciting government officials to violate an oath, forging documents, tampering with witnesses, perjury and stealing computers. Trump’s lawyers called the indictment “incorrect and unconstitutional.”

This is the fourth criminal charge brought against the ex-president. Trump faces up to 20 years in prison, but the politician is expected to avoid the maximum punishment, writes Bloomberg. The Georgia prosecutor’s office said that the politician must appear in court before August 25, and it is planned to begin the consideration of the case within six months.

August 2 vs. Trump was put forward the third accusation, which is related to the storming of the Capitol by his supporters in January 2021. As a result of the incident, five people died. The charge of storming the Capitol includes four counts: “conspiracy to deceive the United States”, “conspiracy to falsify witness statements”, “conspiracy against the rights of American citizens”, “obstruction and attempted obstruction of the proceedings.”

Prior to this, Trump appeared before the court two more times. In April, he was charged with falsifying business documents in silence payments to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels, and in June with possession of classified documents at his residence in Florida.
