Treatment regimens for COVID-19 depending on the ethnic group of the patient are being developed in Astrakhan

In Russia, representatives of different nationalities will be treated for COVID-19, taking into account ethnic characteristics. Now the Astrakhan State Medical University is preparing to develop an individual treatment scheme in this direction. This approach will reduce the number of complications and severe forms of the disease. The rectors of the university, Professor Olga Bashkina, told the TASS agency about this.
The Astrakhan region is one of the multinational regions of the country. Representatives of 140 nationalities live on its territory. According to Bashkina, even the first studies have shown a high frequency of mutations in representatives of different ethnic groups, which predetermines resistance to therapy or the appearance of severe side effects. As the processor explained, earlier studies suggest that people of different ethnic groups also respond differently to drug therapy after covid.
The rector of the university recalled that, according to the International Medical Society, representatives of European ethnic groups in almost 90 percent of cases have a severe disease. At the same time, a protective genotype is often found in East Asians. Bashkina noted that for some genes, the frequency of mutations in Astrakhan is higher than in Europe.
Biobanking of blood samples from patients with coronavirus is currently being created at the Astrakhan State Medical University. The first individual treatment regimens based on them are planned to be developed before the end of the year.
