The transfer of the Holy Trinity icon by Andrei Rublev from the Tretyakov Gallery of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) carries serious risks for the icon, Elizaveta Likhacheva, director of the Pushkin Museum, told TASS. According to her, the icon “may simply be lost, it may fall apart.”
There are three boards, and they are not very well fastened together. This icon has never been presented as miraculous. “Trinity” is the main Russian contribution to Christian iconography, (the main thing in it.— “b”) is not a religious significance, but an art historical significance,” Ms. Likhacheva emphasized.
The “Trinity” was already taken out of the Tretyakov Gallery to the Trinity Cathedral of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra in July 2022 at the personal request of Patriarch Kirill. The icon spent two days in the Lavra. Researchers and restorers of the Tretyakov Gallery did not support this decision and warned that it was impossible to transport the icon.
On May 15, 2023, the Russian Orthodox Church announced that Vladimir Putin had decided to return the Trinity icon to her. Yesterday, May 16, Patriarch Kirill asked the presidential administration to agree on the transfer of the icon to the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior for the celebration of the Trinity (Orthodox celebrate this holiday on June 4). Now the Tretyakov Gallery waiting signing the necessary documents by the Ministry of Culture.
