The movement of heavy trucks along the Trans-Caucasus Highway, connecting Russia with South Ossetia, has been restored again. The Ministry of Emergency Situations for South Ossetia reported in its Telegram-channel. The road has been closed to heavy goods vehicles since the evening of January 12 due to worsening weather conditions.

“The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of South Ossetia is lifting restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles along the Transkam. The road surface on the southern side of the Ruksky tunnel has been cleared by the road services of South Ossetia. The route is operating as normal for all vehicles,” the department said in a statement.

Transkam is the only road to South Ossetia from Russia. Its length is 164 km, most of the route passes through the highlands. On average, about 8 thousand cars pass through it every day. In winter and spring, the road is sometimes blocked due to snow drifts or avalanche danger.

Due to heavy snowfall, the highway was closed to heavy goods vehicles in both directions from 21:40 Moscow time on January 12, 2024. No restrictions were introduced for passenger cars. According to the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations, this is the third road closure due to weather conditions in January 2024.
