Traffic on the highway between Georgia and the Russian Federation is completely paralyzed due to snow

The Department of Highways (DAD) of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Georgia reported that the movement of all types of transport on the international highway Yerevan-Tbilisi-Vladikavkaz-Moscow is prohibited. The restrictions are caused by heavy snowfall and the threat of avalanches.
About the ban on DBP movement announced the day before, December 24th. Today, December 25, the municipality of Stepantsminda told Kommersant that traffic is still blocked, and hundreds of heavy vehicles and passenger buses from Georgia and Armenia are stuck on the Kobi-Gudauri section.
The Yerevan-Tbilisi-Vladikavkaz-Moscow highway runs along the historical Georgian Military Road – the only land route that connects Armenia and Georgia with Russia.
According to a source in the Stepantsminda municipality, a tragic situation is developing on the highway: due to huge traffic jams, drivers of heavy trucks and buses cannot even turn back towards Tbilisi and Yerevan. Drivers are forced to heat their cars, spending gasoline on this, the reserves of which are already running low. There are also women and children on the buses stuck due to snow.
Municipal authorities provide all possible assistance to people, but there are not enough material resources. The central authorities of Georgia are not yet able to send assistance to the victims due to ongoing snowfall, ice and the danger of avalanches in this area.
The situation is aggravated by the fact that after the President of the Russian Federation abolished the visa regime for Georgian citizens from May of this year, many Georgian citizens prefer to go to Moscow and other Russian cities by bus through the Kazbegi-Upper Lars border and customs checkpoint. This led to a significant increase in traffic flow, while maintaining the same risks associated with snow and low highway capacity, especially on the Kobi-Gudauri section.
