Tourist flow of Russians to the Maldives doubled

From January to September 2022, the Russian tourist flow to the Maldives was twice the pre-pandemic one, reports RBC with reference to Rosstat data. For nine months, 79.1 thousand Russians flew there. At the same time, for the same period of pre-pandemic 2019, only 38 thousand citizens of the Russian Federation visited there. However, the Maldives cannot compete with Egypt in this regard: there is a multiple growth with 578 thousand trips last year.
However, according to experts, the growth of tourist flow to the Maldives began in the pandemic years. And they explain the current sharp growth by the fact that this country was one of the first after the start of the pandemic to open flights with Russia, making it easier for tourists with PCR tests to enter. The reorientation of the flow of vacationing Russians also played a role – before, the Maldives was considered an expensive niche destination for us, and now tourists willingly go there, before the pandemic and sanctions, they chose European countries as a vacation spot.
