Tor Developer Appeals Court Decision to Block Browser

The non-profit organization Tor Project (the developer of Tor) has filed an appeal against the court’s decision to block the Tor browser. The document was submitted to the Leninsky District Court of Saratov, reported TASS in the press service of the court.
“A complaint was received from the administrative defendant,” the court said. It is clarified that the complaint has not yet been accepted by the judge, and the Tor Project is the defendant.
The history of blocking Tor Project resources has been going on since 2017, when the Saratov District Court ruled to restrict access to the site from which Tor could be downloaded. In December 2021, Roskomnadzor blocked the main website of the Tor browser. The agency entered the resource into the register of prohibited information.
On May 19, the Saratov Regional Court overturned a 2017 decision to restrict access to the browser. The court agreed with the arguments of representatives of the Tor Project, who stated that the case was considered without involving the company itself. The case was then remanded for retrial.
On May 31, Roskomnadzor demanded that the American company Google remove the Tor Browser application from the Google Play store, citing the decision of the Saratov District Court.
But on July 28, the Leninsky District Court of Saratov again banned Tor in Russia. The court declared the information in Tor Browser prohibited for distribution in the country, banned the Tor Browser application hosted on Google Play, and also restricted access to the Tor Browser program.
The Tor browser allows you to encrypt traffic, making it impossible to track user requests. The browser site was included in the register of those prohibited by Roskomnadzor, since the information posted on the site “ensures the operation of tools that provide access to illegal content.”
