Tokayev proposed to hold a meeting of the EAEU in 2024 in Astana

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed holding a meeting of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in Astana for the anniversary year 2024.

“It would be symbolic to hold a jubilee meeting in Astana, since the agreement on the creation of the Eurasian [экономического] union was signed in the capital of Kazakhstan,” Tokayev said (quote according to TASS).

The Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union was signed in the capital of Kazakhstan on May 29, 2014 between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Today, May 25, a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council is being held in the Grand Kremlin Palace, which, in addition to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is attended by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov and Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Mikhail Myasnikovich.

At the beginning of the meeting, Putin said that the leaders of the countries would exchange views on the main directions of the association’s development. In addition, the meeting will raise issues of integration cooperation in the areas of energy and food security, technological and financial independence, as well as in the field of trade, transport and digital transformation.

During the meeting, the Russian President offered empower the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) with additional powers, subject to the preservation of the consensus of all countries. He also noted that cooperation within the EAEU is going well. According to him, the Russian Federation appreciates partnership with the EAEU member countries, which is built “on the principles of mutual benefit, respect and consideration of each other’s interests.”
