Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has approved amendments to the republic’s Constitution that establish a one-time presidential mandate of seven years and change the name of the capital from Nur-Sultan to Astana.
The signing of the law of the Republic of Kazakhstan by Tokaev was reported by his press service.
Recall that Tokayev proposed to make appropriate changes to the Constitution in early September during an appeal to the people. He also proposed holding early presidential elections this fall. Recall that Tokayev was elected president on March 20, 2019. His first five-year term as president was scheduled to end in 2021. If he now wins the elections in accordance with the new law, he will remain in power until the fall of 2029.
