On November 17, 2019, the first patient with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, later called COVID-19, turned to doctors. He was a 55-year-old resident of Hubei province. Until the beginning of 2020, the new coronavirus had little to no effect on the global media, and scientists believed that it was unlikely to be transmitted from person to person. Since November 2019, more than 640 million people have been infected with coronavirus in the world, about 6.6 million have died from covid or its consequences. In Russia, more than 21.5 million cases of the disease were detected, and the death rate exceeded 391 thousand people.
On January 13, 2020, the first case of infection outside of China was detected. Now cases of the disease have been recorded in more than 200 countries around the world.
On March 29, 2020, the Chinese authorities announced the end of the COVID-19 epidemic in the country, however, outbreaks in some cities of China happen still. In other countries, the pandemic had just begun at that time. Now the leader in the number of cases and deaths is the United States.
Mortality from coronavirus at the beginning of the pandemic was about 6%. But to date, it has significantly decreased due primarily to effective vaccines (more than 12 billion vaccines have been delivered worldwide).
The peak incidence in the United States occurred on January 10, 2022, when more than 1.13 million cases of coronavirus infection were detected per day. Prior to this, the record for the increase in daily incidence belonged to India, where 412 thousand people fell ill on May 5, 2021.
In Russia, the maximum daily increase occurred on February 11, 2022 – almost 204 thousand cases.
