Samples of three people who had contact with a cholera case are being checked in the Leningrad Region
The press service of the government of the Leningrad region reported on Sunday that doctors in the region are checking samples for cholera from three people who had contact with the patient in the Tambov region.
Until the results of the studies, these three people will be in home quarantine. They have no clinical manifestations, the report says.
On July 20, in the Tambov region, a cholera-like pathogen was detected in an Indian citizen who arrived in the region from Delhi. The Indian had signs of an acute intestinal infection of unknown etiology; after laboratory tests, a cholera-like pathogen was found.
In a hotel for labor migrants in Rasskazovo, Tambov region, where the patient lived, the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor took anti-epidemic measures.
In June, the head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, said that there had been no cases of cholera in Russia for several years, but there was always a risk, since any tourist could bring the infection.
According to WHO statistics, since the beginning of 2023, 24 countries have reported outbreaks of the disease as of June 1 – 9 more than during the same period in 2022. WHO considers the risk of further spread of cholera in the world to be very high.
