The head of the World Union of Old Believers, Leonid Sevastyanov, said that Pope Francis invited Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ to meet at one of the airports in Moscow when the pontiff’s plane stops for refueling on the way to Mongolia.
Sevastyanov noted that he received this information from a personal conversation with Francis.
He also recalled that the first meeting between the Pope and the Patriarch took place in 2016 in Havana, also at the airport. Therefore, now a similar meeting would be appropriate. According to Sevastyanov, the airport is now a transit and neutral zone, so such a meeting will not cause opposition from those who consider the visit of the Pope to Russia inappropriate.
Such a meeting could have taken place on August 31 on the Pope’s journey to Mongolia, or on the way back on September 4. So far, the answer of Patriarch Kirill is unknown.
