The authorities of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso announced the creation of an alliance for a joint defense system. This was announced by Colonel Assimi Goita, who is serving as President of Mali during the transition period, on the social network X.
“I signed today with the heads of state of Burkina Faso and Niger the Liptako-Gourma Charter, establishing the Alliance of Sahel States with the aim of creating an architecture of collective defense and mutual assistance for the benefit of our people,” he said.
Let us recall that at the end of July, the Niger military announced the coup on national television and the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum from power. Many countries, including most Western countries and the regional organization ECOWAS, condemned the coup. In early August, the chiefs of staff of the armed forces of the ECOWAS countries met in Abuja, Nigeria, and agreed on a plan for possible military intervention in Niger.
Media also reported in August that Burkina Faso and Mali had deployed warplanes to Niger to respond to any signs of aggression against the country.
