Thousands of Finns demand not to close the checkpoint on the border with Russia

An appeal to the Finnish authorities not to close the checkpoint on the border with Russia was signed by over 8 thousand Internet users. As follows from the website аdressit.com, where the petition is posted, as of 9.20 Moscow time, it had been signed by 8,149 users since November 16.

The description of the initiative states that the government’s decision to completely close border traffic between Finland and the Russian Federation is contrary to human rights. The signatories agree with the demand to change the law because it “breaks family ties.” Many have close relatives on both sides of the border. It turns out that with this decision the Finnish authorities are separating, for example, children from their grandparents. It is especially difficult, of course, for spouses in interethnic marriages.

The Finnish government, “due to the worsening migration situation,” decided to completely close checkpoints on the border with Russia in the southeast of the country (closest to St. Petersburg) from November 18 to February 18, 2024. Four out of 8 checkpoints are closing; the remaining checkpoints are located in northern Finland.
