“They shut our mouths”: Ukrainians told the truth about power outages

The head of the Kyiv military administration Oleksiy Kuleba made a confession: the blackout in the capital and the region could last until the end of December. Considering that light in Kyiv today is already a rare phenomenon, it is even incomprehensible how people survive in such conditions. How the life of the townspeople has changed and what tricks they have to go to cope with everyday problems – in our article.

Residents of the Ukrainian capital waited for the opening of two metro stations that have been closed since the beginning of the NWO – Khreshchatyk and Independence Square. The stations have repeatedly become the object of scandals: because instead of fulfilling their direct functions, they were given over to venues for discos, concerts and performances by Western figures. The townspeople, on the other hand, were forced to get to these stations by bus, and therefore they repeatedly complained to the authorities and asked for their opening. However, the news about the resumption of their work. as well as the fact that in the Kiev metro after the shelling it was possible to establish traffic, causes only a wave of irritation among the people of Kiev.

“We got tired of lying,” Anatoly Belukha, a resident of Kyiv, expressed his emotions in the subway group on the social network. “Stop cheating,” Svetlana Blumen supports him. Some Kievans joke that they will miss the noisy parties in the subway, and also suggest that failures will now become a regular occurrence for the subway, and it is easier and more reliable to transfer to a bus than to suddenly get stuck in a train in a tunnel.

No less than the work of transport, people are worried about the lack of electricity in their homes. In winter Kyiv, there was a rush demand for diesel or gas generators capable of autonomous generation of electricity. You can buy a generator in Kyiv both in the markets and from the hands – through social networks. For example, Daria from Kiev owns a small online store. Sells things from Europe in Kyiv, and sends to other regions by mail.

The girl admits that recently the market forced her to switch from shaving lotions and hand creams to something heavier. “The ER9500 gasoline generator costs from UAH 20,000 (RUB 36,000) to UAH 24,000 (RUB 43,200),” says Daria. – It all depends on the modification, but it’s cheaper than in official stores, where you won’t find one for less than 30,000 UAH (54,000 rubles). We can, if necessary, sell even in bulk.

– Is there a big demand for generators now?

– It is for generators that the demand is good, so we are doing this now. For such money, they are dismantled quickly, so buy while we still have them. Especially popular now are small and low-power generators that can be carried in the hand, as they weigh twenty kilograms. They are also actively buying powerful power banks and charging stations for laptops.

– In apartments it is impossible to install the generator. Why are they buying?

– This thing is necessary for a motorist, they can charge the battery in a car, and from the car they can already charge their gadgets.

On the streets of Kyiv, the generator has become an ubiquitous thing. For example, the authorities abandoned fairs and attractions, but installed a huge, luminous Christmas tree on Sofiyskaya Square. According to the organizers, the tree is decorated with energy-saving garlands. But for them to work, there is always a utility truck nearby with a generator rumbling in the back, which feeds the entire structure. At the same time, one of the public utilities workers should be nearby all the time – in case someone wants to steal a valuable thing.

And stealing among the people of Kiev is gradually becoming a habit and extends not only to generators. Cases of theft of food from supermarkets and even clothes from expensive stores have become more frequent.

All this causes bewilderment among ordinary Kyivans. “What are they doing? What trees? Do they even see what is happening in the country?” Andrey, a resident of the Shevchenko district, is indignant in the Kyiv group on the social network. According to him, the capital’s mayor’s office and personally Vitali Klitschko are in no hurry to work for the benefit of the people; after all, while the apartments and entrances of Kiev residents are dark, and the elevators do not work even in high-rise buildings, the authorities have helpfully provided light in some “important areas”. Andrey complains that on roundabout roads and in parks, street lighting is in full operation, which is not very necessary there, while the sleeping areas of the city are immersed in darkness.

However, the authorities are actively trying to prohibit indignation and discussing the consequences of strikes on the energy system of Ukraine. The other day, the chairman of the Odessa Regional State Administration, Maxim Marchenko, called on Ukrainians to stop discussing the problems that arose after the strikes on social networks. And Marchenko also classified information about repair work to restore electricity in the city, about supplying light to residential buildings. In his opinion, this information could allegedly help the RF Armed Forces to plan new attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.

An employee of the Odessa supermarket Kirill told about what is happening in the city of MK

“Of course, they want to shut people up,” the man said. – In order not to work as it should, and cut budgets quietly. DTEK lie to people in black, hang up when you ask them uncomfortable questions over the phone, and Odessa is mired in corruption. Now we continue to have emergency power outages, but the authorities are doing well.”

Kirill said that without light and heat, his house turned into a “homeless man”, where there is no water, it is impossible to cook food and wash. The house has thin walls and is very cold. “Do you know what is happening with the “points of invincibility”? These smart people placed them in the premises of the stores, only the generators there stop pulling due to the influx of people, break down, and as a result, the store loses light and plunges into darkness, and all refrigerators, all freezers in the department and in the warehouse depend on it. I say this as a supermarket employee. We have not been able to fix the generator, so we are now sitting without work. Patience to all of us.”
