The French government plans to ask FIFA for an investigation as the national football team has been subjected to abuse at home and abroad since the World Cup 22 final in Qatar. The outrageous taunts of French striker Kylian Mbappe by some Argentine fans during the country’s championship and World Cup celebrations in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires should be investigated by FIFA, the world’s football governing body, a senior French cabinet minister has said.

During the return of the Argentina national team to their homeland, a group of local fans set fire to a makeshift coffin lid, decorated with a cross and an image of Mbappe. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez also clutched a toy baby with Mbappe’s face during the winners’ parade on a bus through the capital. Pictures of both incidents have gone viral on social media.

In this regard, it is reported that the French Football Federation and the anti-racism charity SOS Racisme will take legal action against individuals who allowed themselves to use racist insults against Mbappe and his teammates on social networks after the defeat in the World Cup final.

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire, asked about his reaction to the Argentine insults, told Sud Radio that the scenes were “undignified” and openly asked if FIFA should investigate the events.

What is FIFA doing? Sports are fair game. This is respect for others. It’s respect for those who lost,” Le Maire said.

Mbappé and other players of African descent, who make up the majority of France’s national team, have received numerous racist insults from fans on social media.

SOS Racisme took screenshots of over 100 offensive comments to use as evidence in a criminal case against those behind the comments.

The French Football Federation did the same.

“This is an expression of far-right ideology and these people can no longer be considered French,” said Herman Ebonguet, general secretary of SOS Racisme.

He added that the two penalty misses, Kingsley Coman and Aurélien Chouameni, were the most abused and that some players had turned off comments on their social media accounts.

The maximum penalty for online racist slurs in France is one year in prison and a €45,000 fine.

SOS Racisme has already asked FIFA to take action against Argentine fans who sang a racist song about Mbappe and the French national team before the start of the tournament, and is now examining photos coming from Argentina for signs of racism.

At the same time, it became known that the French government intends to contact the Minister of Sports of Argentina because of the ridicule of the fans over the French team at the World Cup.

French Sports Minister Amélie Oudea-Castera said she intends to send an official inquiry to her Argentine counterpart about the “vulgar” taunts of French striker Kylian Mbappe by some Argentine fans in Buenos Aires as they celebrated their team’s return from the World Cup.

“I do not rule out discussing this issue with my colleague. In addition, the French Football Federation also sent an official request to Claudio Tapia, President of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), about the case.

I find all this offensive and unworthy of world champions, ”Udea-Kastera said in an interview with RTL Radio.
