So. About the “unnecessary part of humanity.” “At the beginning of the 21st century, most of the population is simply not needed. Because the future is in the development of complex technologies … And most people do not make any contribution to this. Except perhaps for your personal data… Personal data is a very valuable thing, because it is used to “hack” humanity and train artificial intelligence. But it won’t last that long. As soon as artificial intelligence learns and humanity is “hacked”, the value of personal data will drastically decrease.”

And Harari answers too broadly: “Theoretically, the ability to “hack people” is the ability to understand people better than they understand themselves. It means predicting their choices better than they do, manipulating their feelings, making decisions for them. This answer didn’t work for me at all. But I do remember what example Harari gave from his personal life six months ago in another speech on this topic. “I often give an example from my personal life: I only realized that I was gay when I was 21 years old. And I still think, when I was 15-16, how could I miss it? I missed something very important about myself. And today, or in 5 or 10 years, the algorithm from Microsoft, or Amazon, or from the government will already know about it when you are 12 or 13 years old. They will monitor what is going on in your head. When you see a boy or girl playing on the beach, for example, where do you look?

And this can be done not only with an injection, for example, by introducing a chip into your body, but also increasingly using external devices. For example, a ring or bracelet that measures biometric data. Or now there are already devices that, if you look into the camera, will determine what your pressure, pulse, and so on.

So it could lead to a full-blown totalitarian regime. For example, if in North Korea they force all residents of 10 or 20 years to wear a biometric bracelet that will constantly monitor what is happening in the heart and brain. If you walk into a room with a portrait of Kim Jong Un and the bracelet reflects signs of anger because it has access to your brain, then you are very unlucky. Even George Orwell in 1984 did not get into the brain, it was a personal world, and now it will disappear … “

You sensed a touch of condemnation in Harari’s story. Come on. This is about North Korea. In the South, only sexual orientation and favorite brand of pasta will be monitored.

Personally, what scares me the most is not Harari’s forecasts and thoughts, but the fact that he does not hesitate to make them public. And the fact that his listeners are not horrified, but listen to him with interest. What was once seen as a grim dystopia in every culture is now an acceptable and inevitable future.

It scares me how different we become. For example, there is a bill in Germany “On Self-Determination”, according to which gender can be changed once a year by a simple application to the registry office. It will replace the previous order of 1980, according to which at first it was necessary to obtain two certificates from a doctor and wait for a court decision (in 99% of cases, the court allowed the transition). It was a humiliating law, say the newly recruited German ministers. Doctors asked those who wished about the intimate details of their lives, and they had to wait six months. Of course they did. And I had to wait. This is serious.
