They decided to feed sturgeon fry with garlic and peat

An original way to increase the efficiency of growing fish seed (this is how experts call larvae and fry used for stocking reservoirs) of sturgeon was developed by specialists from the Siberian Federal Scientific Center for Agrobiotechnologies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Recently, Tomsk scientists received a patent for their development.

Scientists have long ago calculated that under natural conditions only 0.01% of young sturgeons hatched from eggs survive. When the population is restored, when larvae are released into water bodies, the survival rate reaches 0.1%, if young animals are released that have grown to 3g (this is the standard weight), then from 1% to 5% can survive. As it became known to MK, in order to increase the fry’s chances of survival, experts suggested adding dry ground garlic and a food supplement made from peat components and vitamins to the feed. Five groups of sturgeon fry participated in the experiment, the first of them was fed with ordinary food, the second – with garlic, the third – with a peat-based food supplement, garlic and peat were added to the fourth and fifth in different proportions (the fifth group of young animals was given twice as much garlic and food additive). At the end of the experiment, fry from the fifth group felt the best: among them, the most individuals survived: they weighed noticeably more than their peers from other groups, moreover, survival in their environment was much higher. Scientists note that such food of the fifth group prevents infection with microbes, viruses and other parasites. In addition, it normalizes the functions of the digestive system, increases the appetite and attractiveness of food, improves its absorption and, as a result, contributes to better preservation and more efficient weight gain in experimental fry.
