“There will be snowfalls in March as well”: meteorologist Vilfand spoke about weather prospects

“We need to enjoy the weather we have”

Heavy snowfall once again hit the capital, complicating, as usual, the lives of many: utility workers, motorists, pedestrians… The head of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, Roman Vilfand, in an exclusive conversation with MK, noted that this winter is indeed the snowiest in the last 30 years. 40 years old, and gave the advice to “enjoy it.”

The head of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, Roman Vilfand, immediately warned that he does not welcome the word “record” (now many are talking about this winter being “record” in many senses): “Meteorologists do not chase records, for us the most important thing is to correctly predict the weather,” said He.

– Do you like the weather, especially what was it like in the morning? – he asked MK a question.

– No, it was very difficult to go in such a snowstorm in the morning…

“Well, the employees of the Hydrometeorological Center are glad that this snowfall was predicted and the city was able to prepare,” said Roman Vilfand. – Indeed, we can say that this winter is very snowy; there hasn’t been such a snowy winter for three or four decades. And it’s not just the height of the snow, although the height is very high, the main thing is its density. We can expect that tomorrow, since the snowfall will continue, the snowdrifts in different areas of Moscow may grow up to 70 cm, up to 60 cm exactly. That’s a lot. Indeed, there have not been such snowdrifts of 60 cm for a long time.

– How long will the snowfall last?

– The most intense snowfall has already passed, but it will continue this evening and tomorrow, but with much less intensity. The night from Friday to Saturday will still be wintery – minus 7, minus 9, but during the day on Saturday the circulation of air masses will change, they will move from the south-west and Atlantic origin, so it will warm up to 0, minus 2 degrees, in a word, there will be thaw weather . Wind increases of up to 15 m per second and precipitation are expected, but precipitation is precisely sleet and light snow… Such an increase in temperature, however, will not bring warmth to either the soul or the body: there will be gusty winds, humidity in the air, precipitation in different forms…

– On Monday the circulation changes again – air masses will move from the north, so night temperatures will reach minus 10, minus 15, on Tuesday – up to minus 18 degrees, and during the day about minus 5. This temperature is 2-3 degrees below normal. This is such very heterogeneous weather.

– Should we still expect heavy snowfalls?

– Yes, and not only in February, but also in March there will be more.

– To be honest, everyone is already somehow tired of so much snow, of winter in general. Everyone is already waiting for spring to come soon…

Let us remember in this regard the writer Honore de Balzac, who said: “A woman’s greatest disappointment comes from high expectations” (and in this case this applies not only to women – AVT). Spring in Moscow begins in the second half of April. March is a winter month. And if you expect spring to come from March 1, you will be disappointed. We need to enjoy the weather we have and the snow cover. Take children on sleds, go skiing yourself – and enjoy the winter.
