German diplomat Ischinger proposed security strategies for Ukraine without NATO membership
Former head of the Munich Security Conference Wolfgang Ischinger in his article for Politico, he proposed strategies for strengthening the security of Ukraine without the republic joining the Western military-political bloc NATO.
From his point of view, one of the options for providing guarantees is the transition of the North Atlantic Alliance to the so-called “defensive escalation”, when the bloc will respond to the strikes of the Russian Armed Forces with new supplies of ammunition to Ukraine.
At the NATO summit in Vilnius, the alliance could switch roles and send a signal to the Russian leadership that, for example, now any Russian shelling of civilian targets in Ukraine will lead to concrete Western responses – from the supply of ammunition and weapons to the transfer of more advanced ballistic or long-range missiles to the Ukrainian side , the diplomat shared his opinion.
As Ischinger noted, the Western military-political bloc could also provide Kyiv with participation in procurement and weapons programs, exercises, the exchange of intelligence data, and participation in meetings of the NATO Council as a permanent guest without the right to vote.
Another strategy could be Ukraine’s ability to base its policy on bilateral security agreements, especially with the United States, the German diplomat said. The corresponding model is similar to Western support for Israel.
