US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping boycotted the G20 virtual summit. Vladimir Putin, on the contrary, took part in the event. The President of Russia, in particular, spoke about the situation in Ukraine and once again assessed the events in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Vyacheslav Volodin was visiting Beijing that day. The Chairman of the State Duma, among other things, held a personal meeting with the head of the People’s Republic of China. Kommersant FM political commentator Dmitry Drize believes that the G20 format is going through hard times.

The current Chairman of the G20, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, held a virtual meeting of the leaders of this group. The purpose of the event, as outlined by the Kremlin press service: summing up the results of the Indian presidency itself, discussing the situation in the global economy and finance, climate issues, and more.

We can immediately say that this event is of little interest to the broad masses of the population, including those in the Russian Federation. Nevertheless, they still managed to attract attention to him. The fact is that the key participants – Joe Biden and Xi Jinping – refused to participate in it.

Vladimir Putin spoke and talked about all the serious problems from Ukraine to the Middle East and even mentioned carbon neutrality, which Russia plans to achieve by 2060. But let’s not bore the listeners. Yes, the first thing that comes to mind: the Chairman of the People’s Republic of China and the President of the United States recently met and came to some kind of agreement, and so they decided to boycott Putin.

With a high degree of probability, unfortunately or fortunately, this is not the case. However, this does not mean that this event is not important. It really does. The point is that the world is changing before our eyes, and the old formats of supposedly peacetime are dying out on their own. And this is good.

It’s time to think about how to avoid global confrontation. And for this we need a completely different, concrete dialogue. And when there is nothing to say or offer, there is no point in wasting time on it. And even more so if you are not just a state, but someone who aspires to leadership – this is the first thing.

Secondly, as sad as it is to say this, there is no longer a single G20, there are different poles where everyone pursues exclusively their own interests. Attempts to unite the South, East and West failed. Once again. And why do we need the G20 if there is the UN, which is already in an unprecedented crisis?

The current world is a club of interests: the Group of Seven, say, BRICS and the League of Arab States. There are contradictions everywhere, but the main task today is to create rules so that all these clubs can coexist and not kill each other. However, it is not yet possible to develop such mechanisms. Although attempts, as we see, are being made, and this is almost the only more or less good news at this difficult moment.

And so it seems that today’s Russia is still at a crossroads. There is no final decision on which club to join in the end. And not everyone is clearly ready to accept us, that is the question. How to avoid being left between many other fires. However, this has nothing to do with the G20. Probably, the format will remain for some time due to inertia. However, if it falls apart soon, this is definitely not a reason to shed tears.
