The head of the Federal Agency for Nationalities Affairs of Russia, Igor Barinov, said that in the last few years a decline in the number of Cossack society has been recorded in Russia. According to him, now the number of Cossacks has decreased by 9 thousand compared to 2022. Among the reasons for the decline in numbers, he named losses in military operations on the territory of Ukraine.
“Over the past few years, we, unfortunately, have recorded a decline in the number of Cossack society. Compared to last year, it decreased by almost 9 thousand people; this is a complex problem, which includes the loss of Cossacks in the Northern Military District, natural mortality due to age, and weak interest on the part of young people to join Cossack societies,” said the head FADN at a plenary session within the framework of the All-Russian seminar-meeting “Russian Cossacks” (quote from TASS).
Mr. Barinov said that it is necessary to show increased attention to the Cossacks who are returning from military operations on the territory of Ukraine. Ataman of the All-Russian Cossack Society Nikolai Doluda said that about 25 thousand Cossacks in 18 Cossack volunteer detachments are now participating in hostilities. Of these, 1,260 were awarded state awards, he added.
According to Mr. Doluda, in total there are about 149 thousand people in Cossack societies, of which about 60 thousand can participate in hostilities. He stated that in 2023 all military Cossack societies returned to combat training and the understanding returned that “a Cossack, first of all, a warrior.”
In June 2023, it was reported that 20 thousand Cossacks were participating in military operations on the territory of Ukraine. Then their total number was estimated at 146 thousand people. In July, the All-Russian Cossack Society reported, that 1,031 Cossacks joined the ranks of the Russian army, the National Guard and the presidential regiment following the results of the spring conscription. The indicator was exceeded by more than 30%.
